Frank Maurer
Global Head of Automation Strategy & Technology | Boehringer Ingelheim

Frank Maurer has over 20 years of experience in management and development of DCS, MES, SCADA and PLC based systems as well as the overarching automation strategies and architectures. He completed his studies of industrial information technology and automation at the University of Applied Sciences Offenburg, where he received the award for the most innovative diploma thesis of the year 2000/2001. During 2001 to 2005 Frank Maurer worked at SSG, first as a software engineer and project manager, later as the head of innovation and member of the company´s leadership team. He joined Boehringer Ingelheim in 2005 as a Project Manager Automation, where he was responsible for a diverse set of projects e.g. a new biopharmaceutical Aseptic Area and a Chemical Pilot Plant. From 2013 until 2016 Frank Maurer took over the lead of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Manufacturing Execution Services Europe being end to end accountable for this important platform and supporting an integral manufacturing automation approach. After this interesting experience he focused again on core process automation and took over responsibility for a local automation team through his position as Head of Bio Germany Modular Automation. In parallel he first became lead engineer of Boehringer Ingelheim´s Large Scale Cell Culture (LSCC) in Vienna and took later global responsibility for strategy and architecture within the bio business unit as it´s Head of Global Automation Strategy and Architecture. Since February 2021 Frank Maurer is the Head of Bio Global Automation at Boehringer Ingelheim, where he continues to drive the automation technology development for the biopharma facility of the future.
